Volunteer Awards
Recognizing the members who make the Alpine Club of Canada run.
Why the Awards Exist
Volunteers are the heart of the Alpine Club of Canada. They run sections, lead trips, organize events, write for club publications, and protect the alpine environment. The ACC Volunteer Awards exist to recognize members who have made significant contributions to furthering the aims and goals of the ACC and of Canadian mountaineering — and to say thank you in a lasting way.
Sections play a key role in this program: local executives and members are best placed to see the day-to-day effort volunteers put in, and nominations from the section level are what keep these awards meaningful.
The Award Progression
The awards are structured as a recognition pathway rather than a single prize. A volunteer's contribution is expected to grow over time, and the awards below are designed to follow that growth — from a first year of enthusiastic involvement through to a lifetime of service. The D. F. Service Award, for example, is explicitly designed as a stepping stone toward the Distinguished Service Award, and a separate technical-leadership track (Eric Brooks Leader Award → Silver Rope for Leadership Award) runs in parallel for members whose contribution is mainly in technical skills leadership.

Nominating a Volunteer
Timeline
- Nominations are accepted and encouraged year-round — if you see a volunteer doing great work, submit a nomination when it happens rather than waiting.
- The annual nomination deadline is December 31.
- Nominations must be submitted by a Club member, using the online nomination form for the relevant award.
- Award winners are approved by the Awards Committee and announced at the Club's Annual General Meeting.
Approval Process
- Each nomination is reviewed by the ACC Awards Committee.
- Approval requires not less than two-thirds of the voting members of the Awards Committee.
- Winners receive formal recognition at the AGM; several awards (such as the D. F. Service Award) include a framed piece of original Canadian art with a plaque describing the award.
What Sections Can Do
- Keep an eye out year-round for volunteers whose contribution deserves recognition — don't wait until December to think about it.
- Encourage section executives and members to submit nominations directly through the award-specific nomination forms on the ACC website.
- Use the progression above to nominate for the award that best matches where a volunteer is in their journey with the section — new volunteers for the Alpine Spirit Award, long-serving members for the Distinguished Service Award or A.O. Wheeler Legacy Award, and technical leaders for the Eric Brooks Leader Award or Silver Rope for Leadership Award.
- Celebrate section winners locally in addition to the recognition they receive at the AGM.
